                              Monique Diabo

This 28 year old graduate of Victoria University and senior dancer of the acclaimed
Canadian Dance and theatre company, Kehewin Native Performance has been dubbed
the Native Janis Joplin/Billie Holiday.

Recently Monique has begun to create her own path in the musical arena.  Her Bluesy
mixes of traditional and contemporary sound have been entertaining Native and Non-Native audiences’ world wide.

Her cultural ties to both land and history have always been both an inspiration for her performances as well as the encouragement to continue to educate and entertain both Native and Non Native audiences.

Since 1994 Monique has been performing as both dancer and singer with Kehewin Native Performance.  She has been on stage since the age of 10, dancing both her traditional dances and contemporary dance.

She has won acclaim for her work during the junior choreographer’s workshop in Toronto, Ontario in 2004.
Her musical career started when she began singing traditional Native songs with her father, hand drum singer, Melvin John.  In 1994 she was the voice of the spirit rock for children's hit "Shkozin Nanabush".  This was followed by performances with Kainai Singers' lead vocalist, Olivia Tailfeathers during the Buffalo Days in Banff, Ab.Canada and again during the Blackfoot Exhibit Opening at the Glenbow museum in Calgary, Alberta.
She made her first recorded vocal appearance on the Chinook Winds soundtrack in 1998 and then appeared at the 1999 World Indigenous peoples Conference on Education in Hilo, Hawaii.

Since then she has performed in New Zealand, Pittsburgh, Miccosukee Festival, Mexico, Hawaii, Montana, and Nebraska.  She has now been asked to do back up vocals for Tiger Tiger and is delighted to once again venture into a new musical genre.
